Neighborhood Meeting

Last night was the Neighborfest at Tatiana's. It was so inspiring to see all the residents come together. It was also amazing to see how many elected officials showed up and stayed for the night. The two State Reps were in attendance, Fennell and Walsh. Bob Fennell received the most applause of the evening, no doubt due to his killer omelettes at the Capitol Diner, but he also does a lot for this community. Just today his name was on some money freed up for some after school activities in Lynn to combat some of the teen violence recently in our area.

The mayor is an embarassment. He got up and spoke for 10 minutes about absolutely nothing. He kept saying that we are in "nuetral." We are not in reverse, we are in nuetral. He gave no vision or plans for how we are going to get out of that state. He pointed at the crowd and made it our problem. While I agree, that we are a big part of the solution, it would be nice to have some vision from the top. Apparently it's going to take next years election to get any. Would someone please run against Mayor Clancy.

There were a lot of City Council members present. That was very nice to see. Council President Tim Phelan spoke. I'm beginning to like this guy a lot. I liked his comments after the vote on taping the council meetings and his commentary on the state of our downtown last night also showed that he is in touch with what is going on.

Councillors Mackin and Colucci were also in attendance but did not speak. I had a brief conversation with Colucci. He was good at listening to the issues. I'm hoping he's thinking of some solutions.

I'm looking forward to a next meeting and hoping it includes Q&A. I was very dissapointed the police department did not show up, but I understand it's been a bit busy for them lately. Two years ago when I bought my condo, I would tell everyone that the crime was gone and it was fine down here. I don't feel that way anymore. It seems like we have a teen shooting or Amber Alert every week these days. I see prostitutes at the corner of Broad and Exchange on a regular basis now and this is a new thing.

Good momentum. How do we keep it going?

Undercover?

Ok, so I just witnessed a crazy undercover sting in front of my house. Behind a speeding moped, running a red light there were two guys driving an SUV. One wearing a bright red football jersey. The other nondescript. Is that really undercover in Lynn or is it just trying to get mugged? I don't even think it was a Pat's jersey. But alas, our incredible men in blue (or red) didn't even give a written warning. I believe I heard, "Just take it easy. People can't see you weaving in and out of traffic." Ummmmmmmmm.....yeah.. I guess if they had been killed running the red light or killed someone else, then it might have been interesting to Lynn's finest. Which leads me to another thing... Shouldn't our special forces SUV unit be up to something more interesting then pulling over mopeds??

Something Is Up Downtown

Police are scouring the neighborhood with the help of the Sheriff's Department. An ambulance and fire truck got involved for about 5 minutes but it looked like that was a false alarm as they moved on pretty quickly down the street after only a few moments in that location. They are now combing the area for someone or something. Too bad I can't radio over to them and help out from the top floor here. More to come if I find out anything.

Who Wants to Run Against Mayor Clancy?

I have some signs and a few markers and I will write anyone's name on them. Anyone!!!!!! Somebody has to run against this guy. Read this article. Everything he claims he's "done" for the City of Lynn is a failure and he's proud of all of it. I will be the first to admit I was duped into moving here, but I also see tons of potential and nothing being done about it. All I see are things being done to destroy it. I will write in someone before I vote for the Chipster.

I Just Watched My 2nd City Council Meeting

The first time I had to leave work early to see in person. This one, I was able to watch on blip.tv. Thank you Seth. This is an amazing leap forward for our community. Great quality, I got used to the sound. Wish the main council secretary would speak into her microphone.

What I saw impressed me. For the most part, these elected officials are fighting for us. A couple of debates impressed me. The denial of a request for a private company to come in and dig up the streets and install ugly devices on public telephone poles. Also, The rally around the foreclosure problem in the city of Lynn and figuring out ways to get these abandoned homes occupied and fixed up and/or demolished. Some good work going on which makes you wonder why Cyr made them look like a bunch of jerks in the first place. Let all the cameras and flash photography (Mr. Cahill) that people want to bring. The council should be honored to be so desired.

To be clear, Mr. Cyr wasted a lot of taxpayer dollars in fighting this thing and I hope Lynn CAM isn't discouraged by his antics. It seems obvious to me, they won't enforce any of those stipulations as they are for the most part, completely ludicrous and it seems as if most of the chamber agrees.

I applaud the few in the chamber that spoke up about the absurdity and even illegal actions proposed in those stipulations.

Bravo City Council and Thank You Seth!!!

The YMCA groupies

I love the YMCA. It's cheap. The two of us pay less then $70 a month. It has more then you would expect for amenities including a pool, basketball court, spinning room, and a racquetball court.
The staff is always very polite and keeps the place looking and working great.

The best part, however, is the guy that greets you when you come in every morning and is still there to wish you a nice day as you leave. Sometimes it's not just him, but a group of older guys shooting the shit in the lobby of the YMCA.

Does anyone know who this guy is or what is his story? I suppose I should stop and talk to him one day.

Cafe Paolina is yumtastic!

We went to Cafe Paolina last night for dinner. What an awesome place!!! It is located in Swampscott on Humphrey Street. Once again not in Lynn, but alas. Why would a restaurant actually open in Lynn?? (pardon the sarcasm, that was for Clancy Clown)

It is an Italian restaurant. The owner was so sweet. They make their pasta fresh. The entrees were cheap and really yummy. They brought out a really great bruschetta to start things off. The best part is you get to bring your own wine. They provide the glasses and the corkscrew. How cool is that?

We will definitely be heading back there for more.

Downtown Bistro to Close????

Say it ain't so? I've heard rumors that the Bistro is closing on August 23rd. Apparently one of the partners wants out and the other doesn't want to go it alone. This is horrible. That place is great. Great food, great chef, great service, and it's here and is doing well.

I hate to see things that are working close up shop. We'll never get ahead in that scenario as a neighborhood.

Anyone know how to cook? Let's keep her open :-)

Mystery Solved - Sign Collector

For months, I've been trying to figure out what that "SAXON" sign was all about one late Thursday night when I was driving into Downtown Lynn. I thought it was part of the Bruce Willis movie shoot, but I guess not. The Lynn Item posted a story about the sign collector dude, Dave Waller. Can you believe the City of Lynn gave him a hard time when he lit one of the signs from inside his building shining out onto the street? It was very cool. I even thought for a second we had a new business in town. I should have known better. What business would want to come and get hassled by this local government. It's much better for a buildings to remain in the abandoned look and feel.

What's next, we can't have off-colored lamps in apartment windows? When are the next elections? I am going to help anyone who wants to run against Clancy!!

Downtown Lynn - Best Italian Sub on Earth

If you haven't been already, you must go to the sub shop right next to Cal News and 47 Central in downtown lynn. He needs a real name and a real sign, since I don't even know what to call the place, but he has the food down to a science. I don't even know what was in that Italian but it was glorious.

They get a lot of repeat business from me. They have tons of options from Chop Suey to Chicken Salad, to gourmet Hot Dogs.

We need these places to stay in business and this is one that deserves to. Go get lunch and dinner there today!!

I challenge any sub shop to an Italian sub duel with this guy.

Nice work Lynn PD!

Looking out of my windows on Sunday I saw a Lynn police car almost take out the clock in Central Square as it raced the wrong way up a one way to get to the MBTA garage. There were lots of people hanging around at the top of the garage which was also unusual. Finally, the Lynn Item posted a story about what happened.

I was impressed with the series of events on Sunday and how fast the Lynn Police responded to this. The citizen involvement was also commendable.

Just Found This Great Tribute to The Mayo Group

Check out this video and then decide if you want to rent or buy from The Mayo Group. How these union guys feel is pretty much the same way they make residents feel.

Mayo Group is Incredibly Unresponsive

Once again we are having problems with The Mayo Group in Lynn. I do not understand how they can continue to be incredibly slow at resolving our issues even in the face of potential lawsuits. We have been having a continuous problem with our building that they simply cannot rectify. Lights in our back staircase leading to the trash area are always out. Light bulbs just don't go out this quickly. Since there are no windows, even in broad daylight, we cannot see the last few stairs. I've fallen down them and now another resident has also fallen. Is it going to take a lawsuit to get their attention? Are people actually renting MV24? I would tread with caution.

Robert Fennell - Is There Anything He Doesn't Do?

This guy is amazing. He is a State Rep. As if that doesn't keep him busy enough, he owns and works at the Capitol Diner on Union St in Central Square. He makes a mean Salsa Omelette, let me tell you. I even saw him landscaping the grounds there one weekend.

Now I find out, he was the volunteer president of the YMCA in Downtown Lynn. He just recently handed over the presidency to Ted Ball.

So my question is, who's Ted Ball? Anyone know anything about him! Maybe he's a politician/restauranteer/philanthropist/musician/actor/brain surgeon.

Bruce Willis Crashes Downtown Lynn, MA

I got off the train from work today to movie crews swarming my neighborhood. It was Hollywood in Lynn, MA. Who'da thunk it? Look at that crane. It had some crazy light source on it.

Apparently they made the vacant storefront on the corner into an electronics shop.

All I could see through the door was a woman in a bikini while they were filming, after my fiancee pointed it out to me. NICE!!

There were a lot of people downtown crowding around to see what was today. If that's all this movie does for us is get groups of people outside and into the Gulu and Flavaz, then that makes me happy.

Kudos to whoever made this possible for the city of Lynn. I noticed actors camped out in Olson's property today. I assume he had a lot to do with making this happen downtown. Nice work!

Love Those Illegal Fireworks

One of my favorite things about having windows looking out on three sections of Lynn are my crazy neighbors with their illegal fireworks displays. They seriously compete with each other over High Rock Tower and it's hilarious. It was no 4th of July, but was still a lot of fun. Next year, stock up. I want a real First Night display.

Happy New Year all. Here's to a successful 2008 for Downtown Lynn.
