The Voice Of Dance Gave Lyrics New Life

If you know G&S, light opera, and early musical theatre, you've no doubt been to a performance by Mass Theatrica at Lynn Arts. They are a well trained group of singers and last night brought forth a concept which I believe to be very powerful. They called it "The Voice of Dance" and I think that is exactly the right name. They sang the lyrics of Cole Porter, Meredith Wilson, Gershwin, Schwartz, and Andrew Lippa. These songs typically do not get an expression of dance in the musicals, but last night, a group of extremely talented dancers brought a new interpretation to these songs. Through their dance, the songs took on much more intensity, the lyrics seemed to make sense, have an emotional charge they otherwise would not have had. I found myself getting lost in the story, not only being told through song, but by the intense passion and storytelling of the dance itself. Great concept, and very well executed. I hope they do more of these in the future and add more dancing into the program.

Next up for Mass Theatrica is "The Music of Leonard Bernstein" on Saturday June 19th at 8PM. Tickets are $15 adults, $13 seniors/students and can be purchased at the door or you can check out their website for other options.
