Critically-acclaimed musical trio Devil Music Ensemble presents “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari,” a multi-media experience featuring Robert Weine’s 1919 silent horror film about murder and mind control in a small German town set to a live, original score. The dynamic musical accompaniment by guitarist Brendon Wood, electric violinist Jonah Rapino, and drummer Tim Nylander, brings the film to life as never before. Incorporating Rock, Electronic, Orchestral, Folk, Improvisation, and Incidental sounds, Devil Music Ensemble strives to present original, diverse works with performances in Boston, throughout the U.S., and recently on their European tour.
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is considered one of the most cherished films of German Expressionism and stands beside Dreyer’s Vampyr and Murnau’s Nosferatu as outstanding examples of the horror genre. The plot tells of a series of murders committed in a small German town, coinciding with the arrival of the mysterious Dr. Caligari (Werner Krauss) at the local fair and leading to a dramatic conclusion that you will have to see for yourself.
"DME's take on the western soundtrack won't be like any you've heard before. Their compositions employ tweaked-out electric guitars, lap steel, vintage analog synthesizers, traditional drums and surprising percussion. The horrific nature of The Cabinet of Dr. Calgari lent itself to haunting strings, creepy bells and a low-hum bass line. Even as the music matches and enhances the moving pictures, the tunes are more abstract, more avant garde than traditional Hollywood soundtracks. Plus, the live performance brings immediacy to the connection between movie and music." Paige M. Travies Knoxville Metro
